Learn more about the places visited

Ksar Ouled Soltane Located around 20 km from Tataouine, Ksar Ouled Soltane is one of the best-preserved ksour in Tunisia. Built from the 15th century onwards, it originally served as a collective granary for Berber communities. Its stacked ghorfas (storage cells), arranged on several levels, create a striking and highly distinctive architectural ensemble. History: This ksar was designed to protect harvests—mainly wheat and barley—from raids and looting. Beyond storage, it also functioned as a place for trade and community gatherings. The site gained international fame after being used as a filming location for Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, where it represented parts of Mos Espa. Ksar Hadada Description: Ksar Hadada, located a few kilometres from Tataouine, is another outstanding example of Berber architecture. Less crowded than other ksour, it has retained a strong sense of authenticity and atmosphere. History: Like Ouled Soltane, it was built as a collective granary for Berber communities. Ksar Hadada is also known for its role as a filming location in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, where it was used as the setting for the slave quarters of Mos Espa. Chenini Village Description: Chenini is a troglodyte village perched on a rocky ridge, offering spectacular panoramic views over the surrounding landscape. The houses, carved directly into the mountain, were designed to protect inhabitants from desert heat and strong winds. History: Founded several centuries ago, Chenini was a strategic settlement for Berber populations. The village is organised around an ancient white mosque, an iconic local landmark. Rich in history, Chenini provides a vivid insight into the traditional way of life in southern Tunisia. Sebkhet el Melah Description: Sebkhet el Melah is a salt lake located along the road between Djerba and Tataouine. Known for its constantly changing colours and unique landscapes, it is a popular spot for photography and scenic stops. History: The lake is part of Tunisia’s many sebkhas, which fill with water during the rainy season. In the past, these salt flats were exploited for salt production; today, they are mainly appreciated for their natural beauty and visual appeal. The Roman Causeway Description: The Roman causeway linking Djerba to the mainland is a historic road built during the Roman era. Stretching over approximately 7 km, it remains a major transport route today. History: Originally constructed for military and commercial purposes, the causeway facilitated the movement of goods between Djerba and the mainland. It still plays an essential role today, particularly in the supply of fresh water to the island.
