TREK IN TUNISIA IN THE DJEBEL DAHAR AT CHENINI AND DOUIRET
IN THE BERBER REGION OF TATAOUINE


This two-day trek in Jebel Dahar, between Chenini and Douiret, offers you a unique experience in the heart of the Berber region of Tataouine in Tunisia.

Departing from your place of stay in Djerba, you will leave for an adventure of discovery, adventure and exploration, combining breathtaking landscapes and cultural immersion.


The departure from Djerba will be at 6:30 a.m., taking the Roman road towards Douiret via Tataouine. You will be accompanied by an experienced guide who will reveal the secrets of the region.

The trek will begin with a 3h30 walk from the magnificent perched village of Douiret towards Chenini. You will pass through picturesque landscapes, green valleys and rocky hills, discovering the natural beauty of the region.

In Chenini, you will take a lunch break to recharge your batteries and soak up the local atmosphere. Then you will resume the trek to a 2h30 walk towards Douiret, passing through the site of the Seven Sleepers.

This place is steeped in legends and history, with seven underground tombs over 4 meters long, believed to house seven Berber men who were immured alive by the Romans.


At the end of the day, you will arrive in Douiret, where you will spend the night in a troglodyte lodge. You will have the opportunity to discover the traditional accommodation of the region and enjoy a local dinner.

On the morning of the second day, you will be transported by 4x4 to Chenini to begin the second part of the trek.

A 3h30 walk awaits you towards Ksar Guermassa, giving you new perspectives on the surrounding landscape.


In Guermassa, you will take a lunch break in a local restaurant, where you can taste traditional dishes.

Then you will have the opportunity to visit the citadel of Guermassa, a historic site rich in architecture and Berber history, for a duration of 1h30.


After this enriching experience, you will be brought back by 4x4 to Djerba, where you will be dropped off at your place of stay, thus ending this unforgettable adventure in Jebel Dahar.

Chenini, located 18 km west of Tataouine, is a magnificent site and one of the most visited in the region.
Perched on a ridge, it offers breathtaking views of the surroundings.

 

You will be fascinated by the cave dwellings built into the rock, creating a unique atmosphere.
 

The road leading to Chenini is of incredible beauty, through a deep gorge, giving the impression of a fortified city in ruins, with huge caves.
 

The departure from the village of Chenini marks the start of a 2-hour walk
through the hills, to reach the village of Douiret.

Douiret is a special place, with its ksar built by the Berbers in a strategic location. The ksour, small fortified villages, were located on the mountains surrounding Douiret, serving as posts advanced monitoring.

 

Douiret is divided into two parts: the old village with its troglodyte dwellings dug into the hills, and the new village located on the side of hill. In the old village, you will discover small dwellings called "ghiren" (plural of "ghar" meaning cave), bearing the family name of their owner.

The citadel of Guermassa is another fascinating place to visit.
To access it, you will need a 4x4, because the Berber village clings to the side of the hill.

 

The inhabitants of Guermassa lived in dug caves in the soft layers of the rock, forming dwellings on two floors that sink into the mountain. Take the path leading in Guermassa is a unique experience, offering breathtaking landscapes the breath and an immersion in the Berber culture.

Exploring Chenini, Douiret and the citadel of Guermassa will allow you
to discover the traditional architecture, the history and the way of life of the Berber populations of the region, while enjoying the natural beauty
surrounding landscapes.

TREK IN THE JEBEL DAHAR AT CHENINI AND DOUIRET

NIGHT IN A TROGLODYTE COTTAGE

 PROGRAM

DAY 1

  • 6:00 am: Departure from your place of stay in Djerba.

  • 8.30 a.m.: Arrival in the village of Douiret after a 2.5 hour drive.

  • 9:00 a.m.: Beginning of the one-day trek in Jebel Dahar, from Douiretat Chenini. Estimated duration of the trek: 3h30.

  • 12:30 p.m.: Lunch at Chenini.

  • 1:30 p.m.: Continuation of the trek back to Douiret via the 7 sleepers site. Estimated duration of the trek: 2h30.

  • 4:00 p.m.: Arrival in Douiret. Installation at the troglodyte lodge for dinner and at night.

DAY 2:

  • 9:00 a.m.: Departure by 4X4 vehicle for Chenini, journey of about 45 minutes.

  • 9:45 a.m.: Beginning of the trek from Chenini to Ksar Guermassa. Estimated duration of the trek: 3h30.

  • 1:15 p.m.: Lunch at Guermassa.

  • 2:30 p.m.: Visit of Ksar Guermassa, estimated duration of the visit: 1 hour 30 minutes.

  • 4:00 p.m.: Departure by 4X4 vehicle for the return to Djerba. 

  • 7:00 p.m.: Arrival at your place of stay in Djerba.

 

Please note that times are approximate and may vary depending on weather conditions and season.

 

This program will allow you to discover the magnificent villages of Douiret, Chenini and Ksar Guermassa while enjoying scenic hikes in the Djebel Dahar.
