Tataouine and the surrounding ksour were a major inspiration for George Lucas' films. Even the name of the city, Tataouine, served as an inspiration for the name of the Star Wars desert planet, the planet Tatooine.

Tataouine was not used as a filming location for the first trilogy and was used very little for the 2000s trilogy.

The filming of the films was spread across different locations in the south of Tunisia.

Around Tozeur, around Tataouine and even on the island of Djerba.

Ksar Ommarsia and Ksar Hadada were authentic settings for the filming of the "Star Wars" movies.

Ksar Ommarsia is located in the city of Medenine, and like Ksar Hadada , it served as the setting for the Mos Espa slave quarters.

Two scenes were filmed there: Anakin's arrival at the storm and Anakin's departure with Qui-Gon and his farewell to Shmi.

YOUR STAR WARS TOUR IN DETAIL

Ksar Ouled Soltane
It served as the model for the Mos Espa slave quarters, but for logistical reasons, was not actually used for filming.

Ksar Hadada
This ksar also served as a setting for the slave quarters.

It is here that the scene was filmed where Qui-Gon Jinn contacts Obi-Wan to ask him to analyze the midichlorian level in the blood taken from Anakin , as well as the scene where Shmi talks about her son, admitting that he has no father.

Matmata: Uncle Owen's house.
Matmata is a village renowned for its troglodyte dwellings.

These are extremely rudimentary and at the same time particularly magnificent dwellings.

These can be underground dwellings or dwellings dug into the side of a mountain.

This type of construction on the rock itself allows you to live in a cool space despite the extreme heat in summer.

In Matmata , the Sidi Driss Hotel served as a backdrop for Uncle Owen's house in 1976 and 2000. The hotel, Sidi Driss welcomes fans for a simple visit.

The hotel is divided into 5 courtyards, the fifth bearing the evocative name of "Star Wars courtyard":

This is where the Lars' dining room and the main courtyard of the house were filmed.

The painted ceiling in the dining room was restored for the filming of Episode II (14 years after the filming of Episode IV!) and is still in perfect condition: It really feels like you're in the movie!

Sidi Bouhlel: This canyon mainly served as a setting for the Jundland Desert .

This is where Luke and C3PO find R2D2 before being attacked by the sandmen, the Tuskens , and rescued by Uncle Ben.

In Episode I, it is from the cliffs of this canyon that the Tuskens, lying in wait during the pod race, fire.

The Canyon is truly beautiful, just as a natural landscape, it is well worth the detour.

Chott El-Gharsa

Chott el-Gharsa, with this entire district of Mos Espa , a village on Tatooine where Anakin works in Episode I.

The setting was entirely created for the saga, in the middle of the sandy desert. In Episode I, we see Qui-Gon Jinn , Padme and Jar Jar Binks walking through the streets and Jar Jar letting himself be tempted by the tip of his tongue by food stalls in the Mos Espa market. In Episode II, we find these same settings during Anakin's visit to Watoo.
