TREKKING TOUR IN DJEBEL DAHAR – LANDSCAPES AND BERBER HERITAGE

This two-day excursion is an immersive adventure through the Berber region, combining a trek through the magnificent mountainous region of Djebel Dahar between Chenini and Douiret and a foray into the spectacular desert at Ksar Ghilane.

You will begin your journey from your place of stay in Zarzis towards Tataouine, the capital of the Berber region.
Along the way, you will visit Ksar Ouled Soltane, one of the many Berber granaries characteristic of the region.

Your discovery continues with the Ksar Beni Barka, another emblematic fortified granary.
After these visits, you will have lunch in a local restaurant in Guermassa.

After lunch you will explore Chenini, a picturesque hilltop village and a true gem of the region.

From Chenini, you will set off on a 2-hour hike through Djebel Dahar, taking you to the village of Douiret.

In the evening, you will have dinner and spend the night in a troglodyte lodge, an authentic experience that will immerse you in the heart of Berber culture.

On the second day of our trip, you will head to the oasis of Ksar Ghilane, a true treasure of the desert.

On site, you can visit the oasis and take a quad or camel ride (optional).
After lunch at a local restaurant nestled at the foot of the dunes, you will begin your return journey to Zarzis.

It is with our heads full of memories that we will drop you off in front of your place of stay in Zarzis, marking the end of this unforgettable adventure through the Berber region and the desert.

Day 1:

Departure from your place of stay in Zarzis towards Tataouine.
Visit of Ksar Ouled Soltane, a fortified Berber granary characteristic of the region.
Discovery of Ksar Beni Barka, another Berber fortified granary.
Lunch at a local restaurant in Guermassa, a charming Berber village.
Guided tour of the perched village of Chenini, a real gem of the region.
Hike through the Djebel Dahar, duration about 2 hours, to reach the village of Douiret.
Installation in a troglodyte lodge for dinner and the night, an immersive experience in the heart of Berber culture.

Day 2:

Discovery of the village of Douiret, with its troglodyte houses and superb views.
Departure for Ksar Ghilane, either by track or by road, depending on the season.
Free time at the oasis of Ksar Ghilane, with the possibility of opting for a quad or camel ride (optional).
Lunch in a restaurant nestled at the foot of the desert dunes.
Feedback back to your place of stay in Zarzis, marking the end of this adventure through the Berber region.

Learn more about the places visited

Ksar Ouled Soltane.
Located southeast of Tataouine, it is one of the most remarkable ksour in Tunisia.

This ksar has the particularity of having a second courtyard, dating from the 19th century, which extends the first built around the 15th century.

It thus has a record number of 400 food reserve storage cells, called ghorfas, which are spread over four or five levels.

Chenini.
Very beautiful site and the most visited located 18 km west of Tataouine, perched on a ridge. You will discover the troglodyte dwellings, built in the rock. Departure for a 2-hour walk through the hills of Djebel Dahar to reach the village of Douiret.

Douiret.
It is divided into two parts: the old village, made up of troglodyte dwellings dug into the hills, and the new village located on the hillside.

The old village is made up of small dwellings, called ghiren (plural of ghar meaning cave), which bear the family name of their owner. South of these oases the vegetation disappears and the Sahara begins.

As far as the eye can see, the dunes of the great eastern erg stretch.

Ksar Ghilane.
The southernmost Tunisian oasis and one of the gateways to the Tunisian Sahara Desert, the oasis is fed by a natural hot spring.
