A 3-DAY DEEP DESERT TOUR BETWEEN KSAR GHILANE AND TEMBAINE
This private 3-day Tunisia desert tour is designed for travellers who want to go beyond a simple overnight stay in Ksar Ghilane. It combines the Berber heritage of Southern Tunisia with a genuine 4x4 journey into the deep Sahara.
After visiting Ksar Ouled Soltane and the mountain village of Chenini, you reach the oasis of Ksar Ghilane for your first night. The following day, your private 4x4 leaves the paved road and follows the desert tracks through Jbil National Park towards Tembaine, in the Grand Erg Oriental.
You spend one night in a private tent at Ksar Ghilane and a second night in a remote Sahara camp near Tembaine.
On the third day, the return journey passes through Douz, Tamezret, Matmata and Toujane, linking the Tunisian Sahara with the Berber landscapes of the Dahar region.

DAY 1 · DJERBA, ZARZIS OR GABÈS – TATAOUINE – CHENINI – KSAR GHILANE

Drive towards Tataouine, with a photo stop near the Sebkhet el Melah salt lake.

Visit the local market and Ksar Ouled Soltane, one of the finest fortified granaries in Southern Tunisia.

DAY 2 · KSAR GHILANE – JBIL NATIONAL PARK – TEMBAINE

Continue across approximately 80 km of desert tracks towards the plateau and mountain of Tembaine.

WHAT IS THE BEST TIME FOR THIS TUNISIA DESERT TOUR?
The recommended season is from mid-September to mid-May, when daytime temperatures are more suitable for a 4x4 journey and nights in the desert.
July and August are not recommended because daytime temperatures can exceed 40°C.
Desert evenings and winter nights can be cold, so warm layers and a windproof jacket remain essential.

Yes. Three days are sufficient for a genuine desert experience combining Ksar Ghilane, Jbil National Park, Tembaine and the Grand Erg Oriental, with two nights in private tents.
This is a good option if you want to combine the Berber villages of Tataouine and Chenini, the Ksar Ghilane oasis and one remote night in the deep Sahara without adding a fourth day.
A 4-day expedition is better if you want to travel farther into the dunes and include Houidath Erreched.

HOW DO WE TRAVEL DURING THE TOUR?
The entire itinerary is operated as a private 4x4 tour with a local driver and guide. Guests travel as passengers; self-driving is not available.
A 4x4 is essential for reaching the tracks of Jbil National Park, Tembaine and remote areas of the Grand Erg Oriental that cannot be accessed in a standard car.

WHERE DOES THE 3-DAY DESERT TOUR START?
Standard pick-up is available from your hotel or accommodation in Djerba, Zarzis or Gabès at approximately 7:30 am on the first day. Drop-off is at the same location or at Djerba airport at the end of the third day.
A departure from Douz or Tozeur may be possible on request, but the itinerary and price must be adapted in advance.

WHAT SHOULD I PACK FOR THE DESERT CAMPS?
Bring light, comfortable clothing for the day, together with a hat, sunglasses and high-protection sunscreen.
For evenings and nights, pack a warm jumper, long trousers and a windproof jacket.
Closed walking shoes, a scarf for wind and sand, a torch or headlamp and a power bank are also useful.

CAN WE SWIM AT KSAR GHILANE?
Yes. Free time is included at the Ksar Ghilane oasis before checking into the camp.
You may swim in the natural hot spring, where the water temperature is approximately 32°C.

ARE THE CAMEL AND QUAD-BIKE RIDES COMPULSORY?
No. Camel and quad-bike rides are entirely optional.
You may simply enjoy the oasis, hot spring, sunset and evening at the camp.
Optional activities are paid directly to the local providers and are subject to availability.

WHERE DO WE SLEEP DURING THE TOUR?
The first night is spent in a private tent at Zmela desert camp near Ksar Ghilane.
