THE OASIS OF KSAR GHILANE AND THE SAHARA DESERT

The oasis of Ksar Ghilane is one of the natural gateways to the Tunisian Sahara Desert and a strategic point of the Grand Erg Oriental. Ksar Ghilane, the southernmost oasis in Tunisia, is a gateway to the Tunisian Sahara and a popular destination for quad biking or camel rides. This oasis is fed by a natural hot spring. Unlike some water sources in the Tunisian desert, the main spring at Ksar Ghilane does not come from a modern well. It emerges naturally at the surface, making it a true geothermal spring. Here are some clarifications on this point: A Natural and Geothermal Spring The Ksar Ghilane spring is fed by a deep fossil aquifer (probably the Albian Aquifer). This water rises naturally to the surface due to geological faults or weak zones in the Earth's crust. This phenomenon is typical in regions where the pressure within the aquifer is strong enough to push the water up without human intervention. Difference from Artificial Wells Unlike places such as Chott el-Jérid or certain water points in Douz, where wells have been drilled to exploit fossil aquifers, the Ksar Ghilane spring is entirely natural. However, in the context of tourism or agriculture development, some small wells may have been drilled nearby to supplement water needs. These wells do not replace the natural spring but simply add to its flow. Why Does the Water Rise Naturally? Geological Pressure: Water trapped in the aquifer is under high pressure, pushing it up when a fault or natural opening is present. Underground Heat: As it rises from the depths, the water heats up due to geothermal energy, explaining its high temperature (30-40°C) at Ksar Ghilane. Ksar Ghilane is home to about fifty nomadic families who sustain themselves through date palm farming and the breeding of goats and sheep. It is an authentic place to discover the traditional lifestyle of Saharan nomads.
