Ksar Ouled Soltane Descriptive: The Ksar Ouled Soltane, located about 20 km from Tataouine, is one of the best-preserved ksour in Tunisia. Built from the fifteenth century, it served as a collective granary for the Berbers. Its ghorfas (storage cells) superimposed and arranged in floors offer impressive architecture. History: This ksar was designed to protect crops, mainly wheat and barley, from attacks by raiders. Local communities also used these granaries as a place of exchange and gathering. This site became world famous after being used as a setting in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, where it depicted the dwellings of Mos Espa. Ksar Hadada Descriptive: Ksar Hadada, located a few kilometers from Tataouine, is another remarkable example of Berber architecture. This historic site, less frequented than other ksour, nevertheless retains an authentic charm. History: Built for similar purposes in Ouled Soltane, it served as a collective granary for the Berber communities. Ksar Hadada is also known for having been a filming location for Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, especially as a setting for the slave quarters of Mos Espa. Village of Chenini Descriptive: Chenini is a cave village perched on a rocky ridge, offering spectacular views of the surrounding area. The houses, dug into the mountain, are designed to protect themselves from the heat and desert winds. History: Founded centuries ago, Chenini was a strategic place for the Berbers. The village is organized around an ancient white mosque, which is an iconic symbol. This place is steeped in history and bears witness to the traditional way of life of the desert dwellers. Sebkhet el Melah Descriptive: Sebkhet el Melah is a salt lake located on the road between Djerba and Tataouine. History: The lake is one of Tunisia's many sebkhas, which fill with water during rainy seasons. In the past, sebkhas were mined for their salt, but today they attract visitors mainly for their natural beauty. Roman Road Descriptive: The Roman road connecting Djerba to the mainland is a historic road built during Roman times. It stretches for about 7 km and is now a major road axis. History: Initially built for military and commercial reasons, this road facilitated the transport of goods between the mainland and Djerba. It still plays an essential role today, especially for the island's fresh water supply.
