DOUZ - THE GATEWAY TO THE SAHARA, AN OASIS OF HISTORY AND CULTURE.

Located 250 km from Djerba, Douz, nicknamed the "Gateway to the Sahara", is an oasis known for its verdant palm grove.

In the past, Douz enjoyed a strategic position, being the most important oasis in the region and an obligatory crossing point for caravans transiting between the Algerian Sahara and Tunisia.

The Mrazigues, residents of Douz, are strongly linked to their Saharan environment. Sand, an omnipresent element, covers most of the streets of Douz.

These dunes are home to the history and memories of their ancestors, a story that is revived every year during the Douz International Sahara Festival.

During these four days, the city comes to life, vibrant with folk dances, a craft fair, poetry competitions and activities on every street corner.

Douz's weekly market, the largest in the region, attracts people from all walks of life for its spices, clothing and flour.

In parallel, the animal market on Thursday morning brings together hundreds of men negotiating and selling goats, sheep and dromedaries.

The desert stretches as far as the eye can see, with temperatures that can reach 50° in summer. The ideal time to visit Douz is between October and March, when the climate is mild but much cooler. Douz is much more than a simple "Gateway to the Sahara".

It is a jewel of history and culture, a glimpse of nomadic life and a vibrant witness to the region's heritage.
