A LITTLE HISTORY
Ksar Ghilane and the Sahara. Ksar Ghilane, the southernmost of Tunisia's oases, is a gateway to the Tunisian Sahara Desert and a popular destination for quad bike rides or camel rides. This oasis is fed by a hot spring, discovered during a failed oil drilling in 1953. Drillers found a confined water table at a depth of about 700 metres. The water gushes out at a temperature of around 32°C, rich in sulphurous properties, and is renowned for its thermal properties. An ideal place for a relaxing swim. Ksar Ghilane is home to about fifty nomadic families who make a living from the exploitation of date palms and the breeding of goats and sheep. It is an authentic space to experience the traditional way of life of the Saharan nomads. The Fort of Tisavar. 4 kilometers from the oasis is Tisavar, an ancient Roman fort built under Emperor Commodus. It served as a strategic outpost for expeditions into the Sahara and controlled caravans carrying wealth to the coasts. The fort has undergone several periods of occupation, particularly in the Middle Ages, before being restored by the French. During World War II, he played a key role in the military strategy of the Leclerc column against the Mareth Line. The Ksar Hallouf: Architectural and Historical Treasure. Traditional architecture The Ksar Hallouf, located on the way back to Djerba, is a remarkable example of Berber architecture. This ksar once served as a collective granary, where local communities stored their crops and precious possessions safely. Its dirt ghorfas (storage cells), arranged in floors, reflect the ingenuity of the locals in taking advantage of the desert's limited resources. These structures keep food away from heat and weather. A panoramic view Ksar Hallouf is also known for offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains and desert plains. This site is perfect for immersing yourself in history while enjoying a peaceful and inspiring setting. A Link to the Past Beyond its practical use, the Ksar Hallouf was also a social and strategic place for the inhabitants of the region. It is a testament to community organization and local history, allowing visitors to better understand Berber and Saharan culture.
