Chenini
Located 18 km west of Tataouine, Chenini is one of the most impressive and most visited sites in southern Tunisia.
Perched on a rocky ridge, this Berber village offers a spectacular panorama over the Djebel Dahar.
Upon arrival, you will be fascinated by its troglodyte dwellings, carved directly into the rock, a testament to an ancient way of life adapted to the region’s arid conditions.
The road to Chenini is a true immersion in a breathtaking natural setting.
Nestled at the bottom of a narrow gorge, the village appears like a fortified ruin, with its massive caves carved into the mountainside.
From Chenini, it is possible to embark on a two-hour trek through the hills to reach Douiret, another iconic site of the Djebel Dahar.
Douiret
Douiret is an ancient Berber village, known for its ksar, perched on one of the most strategic heights of the Djebel Dahar.
This fortified granary was once used to store essential food supplies such as olive oil, barley, wheat, dried figs, and dates.
Around Douiret, four smaller ksour were built on the surrounding hilltops, positioned at the four cardinal points to monitor and defend the area.
The village is divided into two parts:
The old village, carved into the rock, consists of troglodyte dwellings known as ghiren (plural of ghar, meaning cave).
Each dwelling still bears the name of the family that once occupied it.
The new village, built along the hillside, where some houses have been restored and are still inhabited.
Douiret is a place full of history, offering spectacular views of the rugged and arid Dahar landscapes.
Ksar Guermassa
Ksar Guermassa is another hidden gem of the Djebel Dahar.
This Berber village is perched on a hillside, surrounded by steep ridges that enhance its isolated and dramatic setting.
In the past, inhabitants lived in caves carved into the softer layers of rock, alternating with harder stone formations.
These multi-level underground dwellings provided natural protection against the heat and invasions.
Reaching Ksar Guermassa requires a 4x4 vehicle, as the routes are steep and remote.
Taking the road to Guermassa is like stepping into a timeless journey, where the legacy of Berber civilizations remains vividly present.
