Learn more about the treasures of southern Tunisia
Matmata: a thousand-year-old ingenuity Perched on the heights of southern Tunisia, Matmata is known for its troglodyte dwellings. These houses dug directly into the rock were designed to withstand extreme temperatures and desert winds. Contrary to appearances, each house houses a spacious living area with a central courtyard, often surrounded by underground chambers. This village has also attracted international attention thanks to its role in the Star Wars saga: it served as the setting for Luke Skywalker's house. But beyond the films, Matmata is a living lesson in man's adaptation to his environment. During your visit, you will have the opportunity to meet the locals, who generously share their history and way of life. Douz: a gate to infinity nicknamed the "gate of the desert", Douz is much more than just a village. It is a must-see starting point for those who want to explore the Sahara. In the past, this small town was a key stop for caravans crossing North Africa. Today, it offers a fascinating blend of tradition and adventure. The weekly market in Douz is a real explosion of colours and flavours. There are spices, handmade carpets and typical local products. It is also the ideal place to observe the daily life of the inhabitants. A camel ride in the surrounding dunes will transport you to an atmosphere worthy of the tales of the Thousand and One Nights. Chott El Jérid: The Mystery of Mirages. Chott El Jérid is not just a salt lake: it is a huge glittering plain that stretches as far as the eye can see. During the day, the sun hits the crystalline surface, creating optical illusions and mirages that seem to come straight out of a dream. According to local legends, the Chott El Jérid swallowed entire civilizations in its mysterious depths. In reality, this unique landscape is the result of millions of years of evaporation and mineral deposits. When you cross this sea of salt, you will feel a strange feeling of being on another planet. Ksar Ghilane: A Haven of Peace in the Heart of the Dunes. On the border between the desert and the mountains, Ksar Ghilane is a remarkable oasis surrounded by golden dunes. Its natural hot water pool is fed by an underground spring and offers a unique moment of relaxation after a day of exploration. Nearby, you'll find the remains of an ancient Roman fort, silent witnesses to the region's tumultuous history. This place perfectly combines adventure and serenity. For the more curious, a quad bike or camel ride allows you to explore the surroundings and discover unforgettable panoramas. Chenini and the Ksours: A History Engraved in Stone. Chenini is a Berber village that seems frozen in time. Built on a mountain ridge, it offers impressive panoramic views of the surrounding desert. This village is also famous for its unique architecture: fortified granaries called ksour, once used to protect the crops and precious possessions of the local tribes. The village preserves a centuries-old mosque, whose white minaret stands out against the rocky landscape. In Chenini, every alley and building tells a story, and the locals, always welcoming, are delighted to share their heritage with visitors.
