TATAOUINE TREK FROM GABES

DINNER AND NIGHT IN TROGLODYTIC GITE

AND SECOND DAY, DINNER AND NIGHT IN SAHARAN CAMP

THREE DAY TREK

As of the exit of Gabes, the landscape becomes more arid

We arrive in Tataouine capital of the Berber region with Medenine, here begins a desert landscape of rock, it is the region of ksours (Ksar) in the singular, and Ghorfas these granaries of provisions defended by their perched and landlocked position.

We will start the visits by the Ksar Ouled Soltane.

Located southeast of Tataouine, is one of the most remarkable ksour

from Tunisia. This ksar offers the particularity of having a second courtyard, dating from the 19th century, which extends the first built in the 15th century approximately. It thus has the record number of 400 cells for storing food reserves, called Ghorfas, which are distributed over four or five levels.

Then the eight-century-old Béni Barka ksar.

We will have lunch in a restaurant in Guermassa before

to join Chenini and start our trek.

Chenini.

Very beautiful and most visited site located west of Tataouine, perched on a ridge. You will discover the cave dwellings, built in the rock.

Departure for 2 hours of walking through the hills to reach

the village of Douiret

Douiret.

It is divided into two parts: The old village, consisting of cave dwellings dug in the hills, and the new village located

on the hillside.

In the evening, we will settle in a troglodyte hotel where we will have dinner and spend the night.

After breakfast we will visit the village before leaving for the desert at Ksar Ghilane

Ksar Ghilane.

The southernmost of the Tunisian oases and one of the gates of the Tunisian Sahara desert, the oasis is supplied by a hot spring, a source from a failed oil drilling in 1953,

instead of finding oil, the drillers found a water table 700 m deep. The water flows to the surface at around 32 °, it is very sulfurous, you can bathe in it, it would have

thermal virtues. We will have lunch at the foot of the ocher dunes, you can also take a camel ride or an extra quad.

Ksar Ghilane is a refuge for around fifty families of nomads living from the exploitation of the date palm and the breeding of goats and sheep.

4 km from Ksar Ghilane, Tisavar, a fort dating from Roman times

of the Emperor Commodus.

Tisavar is a rectangular construction, the walls, built of cut stones over a height of 1.50 m, in smaller rubble above.

It served as an outpost and base camp for their Saharan expeditions. it also made it possible to control the caravans which conveyed their wealth towards the coasts.

The old building was then occupied in the Middle Ages.

The Tunisian government proposed it on February 17, 2012 for future classification on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

After the meal, on the road for 18 km of track, through the dunes

of sand to join the Saharan encampment.

After installation under your tents (Large tents under which

you are standing), you can attend the ceremony before dinner

baking bread in the sand. Free time at night is yours.

The night under the starry desert sky is an unforgettable experience!

On the third day, after a continental breakfast, we will leave towards Matmata via Tamezret.

Tamezret.

Is famous for its traditional woolen weavings, in particular the traditional bakhnoug woven on vertical looms, then colored and embroidered. The bakhnoug is a long Berber shawl in dark wool decorated with lighter patterns.

An Amazigh museum is located in the village museum Monji Bouras this Berber traditions and history of Tamezret.

Matmata is the name of a Berber tribe which gave its name to the village. This village is renowned for its remarkable cave dwellings

which make it one of the high places of Tunisian tourism.

These are dwellings dug in the sides of the mountain around a large, usually circular well. Around this well constituting the courtyard of the house are dug longitudinally

and in floors

the rooms that will be used for the lower floor of bedrooms (camour),

kitchen (matbakh), sheepfold for goats and stables,

the upper floor being reserved for the storage (makhzen) of cereals, dates, olives and dried figs.

We will also visit the Berber museum before lunch

a succulent homestay meal.
